Zonta Hobart was formed in 1971 and chartered formally in 1972. It was the first club to be established in Tasmania (now Area 5).
History of Zonta Hobart
Zonta was founded in Buffalo New York State USA in 1919. The name Zonta is a Native American Sioux Indian word meaning, "honest and trustworthy". It was adopted to symbolise the combined qualities of honesty and trust, inspiration and the ability to work together for service and world understanding.
In its early days, Zonta Hobart held a number of high profile events to raise funds to support causes aimed at improving the lives of women and girls, especially where disadvantage was being experienced. More recently the club has held sausage sizzles at Bunnings, contributed to an art prize for women and run raffles.
However with the recent increase in membership, Zonta Hobart is aiming to expand its fundraising activities and enter into joint activities such as the Amelia Earhart high tea in January, 2020.
